BREAKIN BREAD, the UK’s only funk and hip
hop label, returns to the 7” format for another foray into the world
of funk and breaks.
Natural Self has already released one 7” for the label under the
name Keno 1. Alongside, The Hermit (aka Nostalgia 77) he released
the iconic “Heavy Heavy” single which turned the heads of funk and
drums addicts the world over.
Other Natural Self product out there includes a number of acclaimed
7”s on Tru Thoughts
The man has now produced a whole albums worth of material and this
7” is the first release on the road to that album. It is safe to
say that the man has his own sound and the world needs to hear what
he can do.
He has produced a hybrid of many musical styles with hip hop and
funk at it’s centre. It’s instrumental, atmospheric, layered and
very visual, but we don’t really want to put a name on his sound.
The main elements are hard drums, mad percussion and all sorts of
instruments thrown into the mix. The production style is left of
centre but he also incorporates live music into the mix. This first
7” is a perfect way to get to know Natural Self’s music:
A “The Sound”
This is a good introduction to his percussion and rhythm. From a
sparse start this track builds through layers of drums, percussion
and saxophone. This is a great dancefloor track that is bound to
keep people happy and shaking their booty!
AA “The Foundation”
This track takes you a little bit deeper into the Natural Self mindstate.
This is a slower altogether moodier affair which gives a nod to
hip hop, jazz and downtempo beats. The drums are heavier than ever
and the sax gives the tune an anthemic feel. Definitely one for
the smokers and mixtape heads out there. Both tracks feature live
instrumentation from John Styles of the Quantic Soul Orchestra on
Saxophone. We hope you agree, this is a bit of a departure from
the normal offerings down at the Breakin Bread Bakery.
This is leftfield, eclectic ish but it will still rock the floor
at the Breakin Bread Club and as a result it’s ideal for a Breakin
Bread release.
