BREAKIN BREAD continue to push their brand
of “DIRTY, BEATBREAKIN’ FUNK AND HIP HOP” with a 7” from Ill Boogs.
Ill Boogs is one of the UK’s top b-boys (breakdancers). He was one
of the founding members of the Floor Science Crew and he went on
to become a key member of the legendary Born To Rock and Sinstars
Crews. The label first got to know Ill Boogs when he came down to
the early Brixton club sessions (way back in 1998) held by the Breakin
Bread crew,. Since then Ill Boogs has probably been to more Breakin
Bread parties than any other b-boy in the UK.
As a result, it’s completely natural that Ill Boogs’ musical offerings
are right up our street and when we heard his latest productions
we realised that we needed to get these to a wider audience.
We hope you’ll agree that Boogs has produced a tight funky/beatsy
7” for us….
Side A “Gypsy Rock”
This is a straight up B-Boy tune. Made by a b-boy for b-boys. It
kicks off with a deep bassline and then goes straight into drums,
keys and horns. The drums have a bit of a disco feel to them and
the tune builds nicely through a succession of breakdowns and tempo
changes. This tune has a real groove to it and we’ve even had to
persuade some people that it is not an original funk tune and yes
it is made from samples! It just goes to show how much dancers actually
“feel” music. Gypsy Rock never fails to get people on the floor……b-boys,
party goers, wall huggers, they’ll all be feeling this one
Side B “The Grump”
More of a cut and paste funk tune than the b-boy track on the A
side. This ones a bit slower and sparser. Again there are horns
in here and the drums have that classic “boom bap” to them and again
this has been tried and tested on the dancefloor by the Breakin
Bread crew.
This one rocks the dancefloor but won’t always generate a circle
with legs flying out of it!
