BREAKIN BREAD continue to push their brand
of "DIRTY, BEATBREAKIN' FUNK AND HIP HOP" with second 12" lifted
from Ghost's debut album "Seldom Seen Often Heard"(one of the bestselling
independent hip hop albums in 2006).
"Basic Instinct" was one of the most played and requested tracks
from the album. The 12" takes the track to another level with 2
remixes, and 3 instrumentals.
Ghost's first 12", Ghost Stories, came out in 2002 and introduced
Ghost's deeply musical approach. He developed his blueprint of hip
hop with a nod to the past and an eye firmly on the future as 2
more singles followed on Breakin Bread and a number of his productions
for MC's came out on other labels (Lowlife, Receptor, Suspect-Packages).
Each of his releases has garnered critical acclaim as well as strong
sales. We struggle to describe his style because Ghost's production
refuses to be categorised. It's got that Boom Bap feel, it's deep
and layered, it's bringing a new edge to the scene and it's just
dope. Ghost is now regarded as one of UK hip hop's premier producers
and has picked up a strong following who buy everything he does
and he's gained DJ support from the likes of Mr Scruff, Skitz, Excalibah,
Gilles Peterson, Semtex, and a host of international DJ's.
On "Seldom Seen Often Heard", Ghosts production was challenging,
cerebral, and melancholy and with it Ghost confirmed to us all that
he is certainly not the average UK hip hop producer. The reactions
to the album were incredible from both fans and critics alike and
it sold well all over the world. Ghost has been playing gigs all
over the UK and Europe to support the album and everywhere he goes
he gets props for breaking the mould of UK hip hop.
This 12" shows exactly why Ghost is so different. He has teamed
up with MC Abstract Rude from California (a member of Haiku D'Etat
and Project Blowed, affiliated to The Freestyle Fellowship) and
Breakin Bread label mate Natural Self for a package that should
take Ghost to a whole new audience
1. Basic Instinct (Album Version)
A stomping uptempo beat shows you Ghost finds it easy to get out
of the 90-100bpm stereotype beat. This is more a of a neo soul ass
shaker than straight up hip hop. Abstract Rude knew that immediately
and came up with some meaningful lyrics on leading a good life,
being humble, friendship and growing up.
2. Basic Instinct (Natural Self Remix)
Breakin Bread's beat and percussion master was keen to remix a track
from Ghosts album and he has come up trumps hear with a rootsy,
dancefloor banger tinged with heavy bass and a latin/afro feel.
3. Basic Instinct (Ghost Remix)
This mix was a bit of an accident. Breakin Bread thought the 12"
was ready to go to mastering when Ghost brought this remix in one
morning. Ghost himself says "it was just one of those things, I
was working on a beat and suddenly realised it would fit perfectly
with Abstract Rude's verses". We're glad he did realise because
this mix adds to the 12" package with urgent shuffling drums, deep
basslines and some crazy keyboard action. Another dancefloor sureshot!
4. Round Trip
Ghost has always produced dope instrumentals but has so far preferred
to release vocal tracks. Now he's ready to release some of these
instrumentals and he's working on a whole instrumental project.
This track is a teaser to show you what he can do and where he'll
be going on future releases. This is a heavy, midtempo, ethereal,
builder of a track that has echoes of DJ Shadow and RJD2 but with
Ghost's signature vibe. The spoken word samples give this a spooky
(almost Ghostly (!)) feel.
5 & 6. Instrumentals (Album Version and Ghost remix)
We hope you agree that this is an all round package that will appeal
to fans of hip hop as well as dance music fans in general. Ghost
emerged from the UK hip hop scene and will always have his roots
there but he's certainly not limited to that genre…
