Breakin
Bread continue to release different styles of soul and hip hop and
now drop Lingua Franca's second single following their debut release
late last year. Their first single received critical acclaim and
good underground sales. When the 12" sells out and does more physical
units than downloads you know the underground support is strong!
Lingua Franca are a London based duo of deejay/producer Ghost and
sweet soul vocalist Devorah. They met through a mutual friend when
Ghost was looking to move beyond working with rappers. Their styles
complimented each other perfectly and soon after Lingua Franca was
born. Ghost second album will be released in mid June so this is
a teaser single to keep the new found fans happy whilst the finishing
touches to The Lingua Franca album.
Background:
Devorah has been compared to Jill Scott, Alice Russell, Massive
Attack's Shara Nelson and even the Sugababes. She has worked with
the likes of Mawglee from Tru Thoughts and Jazzwank's Slip. When
you see her live you won't believe how much power is possible from
such a tiny frame. The girl has power!
Ghost is an established UK beatsmith and his uncompromising production
style has made him a favourite of Mr Scruff, Gilles Peterson, Zane
Lowe and Steve Lamacq. He is also an established deejay spinning
everywhere from Glastonbury to Lithuania and he's been on compilations
such as DJ Yoda's Fabric Live, has remixed and produced for Nicole
Willis, Kashmere and Braintax and has an impressive number of solo
projects under his belt.
Together their music has few boundaries. They touch on funk, jazz,
hip hop and soul and ride uptempo club stompers as much as they
chill with laidback soul and dreamy summer tracks.
This
single is a perfect summer release … "Money" kicks in with some
rousing horns and drops into a beat ballad. Devorah rides the beat
in her own unique way and vocalises about not needing a mans money.
This girl can look after herself!
"Work
or Play" has got Ghost going all quirky on the beats. If this isn't
a goodtime summer track we don't know what is. The rawness and fragility
of Devorah's vocals really come thru on this track and show one
of the many styles she's capable of.
Their 4 piece band have been performing live since the first release,
adding new dimensions to the Lingua Franca sound and showcasing
Devorah's amazing style and delivery. In recent months they've played
the Jazz Café and 93 Feet East in their hometown and have also been
touring the smaller venues around UK and Europe. Watch for some
bigger shows as they get close to their album release.
The debut Lingua Franca album "Things Don't Stay The Same" will
be released in the Autumn.
