drums! Beats, breaks, rolls, all live, no loops. Breakin Bread continue
their specialist Drums Series of 7"s with Mark Claydon joining Virgil
Howe for 2 killer beat heavy tracks. Breaks for the future!
Breakin Bread is rooted in hip hop and all things related to hip
hop so tracks with heavy drums and breakbeats are staples of the
output of the label and the turntables of the clubs. The Drums Series
features drummers that the Breakin Bread Crew have got to know since
they launched their club night thirteen years ago.
Side A - The Claydon Break
This time round the guys take it back to more of an original 70s
funk band sound. Mark Claydon underpins the track with a steady
uptempo breaks. Virgil and Nick Hirsch from The Killer Meters take
the track into driving heavy deep funk rock territory. A couple
of clean breaks are embellished with big build ups and multi instrumental
frenzy. We were all in the studio for this one and its one of the
most intense studio sessions we've ever done.
Side B - Cosmic Exotica
This is Virgil's homage to rare as hens teeth Asian Psych Disco
breaks. He can imagine Finders Keepers or Now Again records re-issuing
this strange but break heavy offering. Think of a Chinese Big Band
dropping this in the early 70's for some Grind-House biker movie
drug scene that gets a bit lary as a massive fight breaks out! Uptempo
breaks for the dancefloor!
Background:
Breakin Bread head honcho Skeg has known Mark Claydon for years
having booked him for numerous gigs. As one of the UK's top drummers
it was only right he introduced Mark and Virgil to each other for
a bit of drumming indulgence!
A true ambassador of playing the groove, Mark Claydon is known in
musician's circles as the man to hire for the fattest beats in town.
With an impressive and extensive CV including hit singles with Liberty
X and regular work with The Getup, Jezebel Sextet, James Morton's
Porkchop and tours with Soul legend Sir Joe Quartermain, his playing
is in high demand. Specialising in old school Funk and Soul, Mark
has years of gigging and studio experience and caters for a variety
of demands, from Musicals to Break-beats, T.V Commercials to Classic
Swing. Past performances include appearances on ITV, live sessions
for BBC Radio 2, work with EMI Records, Virgin Records and Dreamworks
Productions.
Virgil
Howe aka Sparo is the drummer behind The Killer Meters. He's got
a big rock lineage; his dad is Steve Howe the guitarist from the
legendary prog rockers "Yes". He has released his own album on Scenario
records and is also known as one of the original DJ's on the legendary
London pirate station Itch FM. Virgil has been gigging and doing
sessions for years, honing his skills with acts such as Little Barrie,
Shawn Lee and The Future Sound Of London's Amorphous Androgynous
to name but a few.
